The first time I coached a beginner through their first Daniel Fast, she told me the hunger wasn’t the hard part, not knowing what to eat next was. As a certified nutritionist, I built this 7-day Daniel Fast meal plan for beginners to fix exactly that problem.
If you haven’t done the Daniel Fast before, the planning is harder than the hunger. For the first two days, a large number of newbies are unsure of what to eat, anxiously search for something unplanned, and lose momentum before they’ve even begun.
This 7-day Daniel Fast meal plan for beginners is built to remove that guesswork. Every meal is simple to prepare, made using easily accessible items, and doesn’t require complex cooking skills.
Before you begin, make sure you understand exactly what foods are allowed and what should be avoided by reading the full → [Daniel Fast Food List].
What is the beginner’s Daniel Fast?
The Daniel Fast is a plant-based fast rooted in the Bible, specifically Daniel 1:12, where Daniel declined the king’s food in favour of vegetables and water.
The simplest way for beginners to understand it:
Eat: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, water, herbal tea, and plant oils.
Avoid: meat, dairy, eggs, sugar, honey, yeast, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods.
That’s the entire structure. These two rules apply to every meal in this plan.
Can I Do a Daniel Fast for 7 Days?
Yes, without a doubt. A 7-day Daniel Fast is a popular and completely acceptable variation of the standard 21-day fast.
Most of my clients actually start with 7 days, then extend to 21 days once they’ve seen how their bodies respond and built new eating habits. That’s exactly why this schedule was built the way it is, as a real starting point, not a compromise.

5 Tips for Daniel Fast Beginners
Start cutting out coffee 2-3 days early. This is the one I wish someone had told me before my first fast — the caffeine-withdrawal headache on day one is rough, and it’s completely avoidable if you taper down beforehand.
Drink more water than you think you need. Most people on the Daniel Fast get mildly dehydrated simply because they’ve cut their usual drinks. Aim for 2-3 litres a day.
Don’t skip meals. The Daniel Fast naturally runs lower in calories than most people are used to. Skipping meals leads to extreme hunger, poor choices, and giving up. Eat all three meals every day.
Use plenty of spices. The food doesn’t have to be bland — fresh herbs, garlic, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon, and cumin make a real difference. This is honestly what kept me enjoying the food instead of just tolerating it.
Cook in bulk. Every Sunday, cook a big pot of grains and a big pot of legumes. This is the single habit that cuts daily cooking time down to 10-15 minutes for the rest of the week.
Can a Diabetic Do the Daniel Fast?
Please note: This section is general information, not medical advice; always check with your own doctor before starting.
Yes, but carefully. The Daniel Fast’s high fibre and plant-based carbohydrate content can affect blood sugar levels, so as a certified nutritionist, I recommend anyone managing diabetes take a few extra precautions:
- Check blood sugar more frequently during the fast
- Focus on nutrient-dense foods like non-starchy vegetables, quinoa, and lentils
- Avoid eating large amounts of fruit or sweet potatoes in one sitting
- Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before starting
The fast’s whole-food, high-fibre nature can actually support long-term blood sugar control, but anyone with diabetes should get medical guidance before beginning, not after.
Extending to 14 Days or 21 Days
Many people choose to continue past seven days.
For a 14-day Daniel Fast, repeat this meal plan for a second week, or swap certain days around for variety.
For the full 21-day Daniel Fast, repeat the plan three times. By the second week, you’ll already know your favourite meals, and staying consistent gets much easier.
